Central Security

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a ULC-listed monitoring company and one that isn't?+

A monitoring company approved by the Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC) has to follow strict guidelines and codes, and ULC inspectors check in on an ongoing basis. Only ULC-approved companies can issue ULC certificates, which insurance companies sometimes require for higher-security systems.

How does my security system reach the monitoring company?+

Your system uses your existing phone line. When your alarm triggers, it calls our central computer over that line and sends the alarm details, then your phone line goes back to normal service. IP backup, cellular backup, and dedicated lines are all available for more secure monitoring.

How many keypads do I need?+

Keypads are usually placed at entry and exit doors. If you come in and out through both a front door and a garage door, for example, two keypads make sense so you can arm from one and disarm from the other.

Can I use motion sensors if I have pets?+

Yes. Pet-immune motion sensors that ignore animals under 100 lbs are available, though they need to be installed so the animal can't get within 6 feet of the sensor. If you have several pets, we'd suggest glassbreak detectors instead of motion sensors.

How often should I test my security system?+

Weekly is ideal, monthly is acceptable. To test it, arm the system, wait out the delay, then open a door or window without disarming. Keep your ID code handy in case our monitoring station calls to confirm it's really you.

How much security do I actually need?+

After a qualified security expert evaluates your property, try this: stand outside and think like someone trying to break in. Look for the easiest way in, a basement window, a back door, a window off a deck. Those are the spots worth protecting first, and they should match what the evaluator flagged.

Should I let my alarm company know if I'll be away for a while?+

Yes, always let us know when you're leaving, when you're back, and how to reach you. We can set up special instructions for the time you're away, like a neighbour holding a key, and it's worth telling the people on your emergency contact list too.
